Fish is 4.7 inches long!
This is a very attractive fossil fish. This is Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This fine specimen was found by Steve Hess in 2008. The large fish exhibits wonderful detail - the bone structure is well preserved, and the fins and tail are easily seen. The eye socket of the fish is clearly defined, and even some of the the scale pattern is noticeable. The distinct fish has great, orangish-brown color that contrasts nicely with the cream-colored matrix. The striking fossil is well showcased on the semi-rectangular plate of shale. This is a very displayable example of a fossil herring from the Eocene.
