    FOSSIL FISH PLATE FEATURING "FISH-IN-A-FISH"
Mioplosus sp. Diplomystus sp. Knightia sp.
    Eocene
    Green River Formation, Wyoming
The Green River Formation of Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado not only captures finely preserved fossil flora and fauna of the Eocene 48-million years ago; occasionally it is able to capture certain events such as predator-prey interactions. On this tan limestone plate are three fish species; the Knightia and Diplomystus are similar to herring and anchovies, while the Mioplosus is similar to a perch. The Mioplosus made the mistake of attacking and consuming a fair sized Knightia that likely ended up causing fatal internal injuries to the Mioplosus. The Mioplusus is towards the center of the plate with a well defined fossil fish in its stomach. All fish have been professionally prepared to bring out fine bone and scale details; contrasting nicely on the tan limestone matrix. The largest fish, the Mioplosus, measures 5 ½ inches long and the plate itself measures 22 x 14 inches.
